Sgt J.B. Firth (S/N 1850441)
- Prisoner of War
Sgt J.B. Firth was onboard a RAF Lancaster that crashed
near La Frenaye, Seine Maritime on August 7, 1944. He bailed out and was
arrested by the Germans shortly after touching ground; he spent the balance
of the war in German stalags.
Three airmen of the same aircraft died in the crash and
now rest in peace in
La Frenaye cemetery.
Ernie Manning took part in the same bombing raid and
provided the following information:

"Firth was the last out of the aircraft, having
had a great difficulty getting through the forward escape hatch and believed
he was only 200 feet above ground when his chute opened. He landed safely
albeit without his boots. His luck soon changed because he was captured
almost immediately by a German patrol. He spent one night in La Frenaye
before being moved to Rouen for interrogation and then the remainder of the
war in Stalags VII and IIIA" |
